Brief KP Overview:

1. KP uses the Sidereal Zodiac, the Placidus House System, and the KP Ayanamsa. To ensure you are working with the correct KP ayanamsa and constructing the chart properly, please take a moment to review the Table of Yearly KP Ayanamsha's for the Years 1900-2052 and Constructing a KP Chart using various Astrological Software .

2. The Nakshatras (constellations), Star Lords and Sub Lords play a major role in delineating KP charts, so you will need to familiarize yourself with the K.P. Star & Sub Lord Table.

3. The Vimshottari Dasha system for timing events has been advocated by the great seers of our past, and is based on the constellations and the sub-divisions of the constellations.

4. For accurately assessing and evaluating the strength or weakness of a house and its lord, you must take into consideration the sign, the constellation, the star lord, and the sub lord.

5. The effects of any planet can be evaluated quite clearly if we know:

     a. The placement of the planet in the horoscope

     b. The lord of the house the planet is posited in

     c. The star lord of the planet

     d. The sub-lord of the planet

6. So we can easily see that in the KP system of delineation, a planet is under the control of the lord of the sign, the star lord and the sub lord of the constellation.

Note: Many gems still remain hidden in astrology. Through investigative research - coupled with the tools already given to us by the brilliance and efforts of Professor K. S. Krishnamurti - KP shows strong promise for digging deeper in the right places for this hidden knowledge. I have found KP to be a system very rich in promise, worthy of your highest considerations if you are a serious student and/or professional, and wide open for investigative research. KP is most definitely worth taking a serious look at.

For KP Beginners:

A good way to visualize what is happening with planetary energies is to first become very familiar with the representations and significations of the signs. planets, houses, (and Nakshatras.) Then look at the sign and the star as being the containers, while the planet represents the content.

Dasha:

The Planet represents the Source.

The Star Lord represents the effects and the results.

The Sub Lord gives us an idea of the final direction of that result.

 Aspects:

  1. Calculate the exact differences between the different planets.

  2. Between the planets and the cusps of the 12 houses.

  3. The distance between the planets and the Part of Fortune.

Note the Lord of the Constellations  - also known as Star Lord (SL) or Nakshatra Lord (NL).

Saturn: 3rd and 10th aspects are stronger than its 7th aspect.

Jupiter: 5th and 9th aspects are more powerful than its 7th aspect.

Mars: 4th and 8th aspects are more powerful than its 7th aspect.

Conjunctions can occur within the range of 12 degrees

Karakas's and Karakatwa's:

Each planet has certain things which it is significator for, or certain things it represents. The significator is called the the Karaka and the things represented are the Karakatwas.

Overview of Western Major Aspects:

The first 10 aspects below are numbered according to their order of power.

"The Western system of aspects must be studied and used so as to arrive at accurate predictions." (Quote from First Reader: Casting the Horoscope: 9th Edition:2000: page 113)

 1.

Conjunction:

1. Can be either good or adverse, depending on the planetary connections being of a  benefic or malefic  nature, and by Adhipatya (rulership).

(a)    Immensely good between benefics

(b)   Malignant between a benefic and a malefic

2. Jupiter, Venus, un-afflicted Mercury and waxing Moon are natural benefics.

3. Sun, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Rahu and Ketu are natural malefics.

Too much importance should not be attached to the natural tendency of a planet. What is more important is whether the planet is benefic or malefic by Adhipathya (rulership), since the results shown by lordship will be pronounced. (Malefics are lords of 6th, 8th, and 12th.)

 2.

Parallel of Declination:

(Or contra-parallels). Nature same as conjunctions.

 3.

Opposition:

180 degrees apart. Adverse in nature, indicating tension if the planets are malefic by nature or evil by lordship.

 4.

Trine:

120 degrees. Very powerful for good. Benign in nature.

 5.

Quincunx:

150 degrees. Adverse in nature.

An aspect or conjunction “just within” the range of orb is weak in power.

Rapt: 2 planets occupying the same degree and minute are in rapt conjunction. Exact aspect (conjunction) is styled rapt or partile.

Platic: An aspect that is just within the orb (either applying or separating) is termed platic or wide.

Progressions:

1. Secondary Progressions are based on a formula of a day in the ephemeris being equivalent to one year of life - or a ratio of 1 to 365.
2. Tertiary Progressions are based on a formula of a day in the ephemeris being equivalent to a lunar period (or a lunar month) - or a ratio of 1 to 27.32.
3. Minor Progressions are based on the lunar period being equivalent to one year of life - or a ratio of 27.32 to 365.

Average Planetary Speeds:

If the planet's increment is less than the average motion of the planet,  it is moving slowly, if the increment is larger than the average motion of the planet, it is moving fast. Planets appear to slow down, so to speak, when they are about to station retrograde, and are also slow when they about to station direct.

Sun: Approximate speed is 59' 08" (average)

Moon: Normal approximate speed is 10' 36" to 13'

Mars: Normal approximate speed is 30' to 45' per day (31' 27"  - 33' 29" average)

Mercury: Normal approximate speed is 59' 08"

Mutual Application: When 2 planets are within the range of an aspect and one of them is retrograde. (Sun and Moon are never retrograde; Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde).

Retrograde Planets:

Mercury is retrograde for a period of 24 days, and is stationing about 1 day before and after retrograde.

Venus is retrograde for 42 days and is stationary for about 2 days before and after retrogradation.

Jupiter is retrograde for about 120 days, remaining stationary for about 5 days before and after.

A planet in rapt conjunction with the Sun is considered to be eclipsed and virtually powerless. (With the exception of  Mercury).

Planets within 5 degrees from the Sun are in combustion (eclipsed).

Planets 10 degrees from the Sun – combustion is ordinary.

Planets beyond 15 degrees from the Sun – there is no combustion.

An applying aspect is powerful and connoted new experience.

An” out of orb aspect” can be brought about by a planet in the middle of both planets, aspecting each planet. (Transmutes the influence).

Check aspects to House Cusps and the Part of Fortune (PF). (Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun = PF. The Part of Fortune represents the position of the Moon if the chart were rotated so that the Sun were on the Ascendant - in other words - the position of the Moon on a Solar Chart.)

 Aspects:

  1. Planets to planets.
  2. Planets to house cusps.
  3. Planets to the Part of Fortune.

 Principles of Judgment:

Evaluate the aspects: Aspects are the influences that modify the situations/events, and successful predictions can not be realized until and unless the aspects are properly integrated and synthesized, and then studied for their influences in tempering any given event or situation.

  1. First assess the strength of the aspect.
  2. What is the quality of the aspect? Is it a beneficial aspect or an evil one?
  3. Is the aspect exact (rapt, partile) or is it wide (platic)? If platic, note whether the aspect is in the process of formation or dissolution.
  4. Note the affairs governed by the house occupied by the aspected planet. Is it conjoined with any other planet at the same time? Associations with a benefic (lord of a beneficial house in a chart) is very good and auspicious. Any connections with malefics, most especially with lords of the 6th, 8th, or 12th either by being conjoined with them or occupying their nakshatras, etc, portends evil. The nakshatra occupied by a planet is the most important as the results denoted by the nakshatra lord (by its ownership) will mostly predominate.
  5. What does the aspected planet denote by his lordship? Is he a benefic or not? No doubt a planet possesses certain natural characteristics and these results will operate, but what the planet has to give by lordship will even change the results indicated by its nature, for example, Jupiter, a benefic by nature will be evil by owning evil houses. Saturn by owning favorable houses becomes a benefic. Even these results are modified and changed by the occupation of various houses in the chart. The correct way is to judge by taking the planets occupation, lordship of houses, and its nature. Occupation in a particular constellation and the modification by the lord of the constellation are still more important. Jupiter and Venus, who are natural benefics, prove to be the worst evils for a number of people, and the natural malefics, Mars and Saturn, immensely benefit some, as they occupy the constellations of the planets owning and occupying good houses.
  6. Is the aspected planet placed in a house, which is 6th, 8th, or 12th to the one it owns? Find out whether it is in a good angle (aspect) to the cusp of the house of which it is the owner. Suppose a person is born when the 29th degree of Aries (Mesha) was rising in the East. Then Mars rules the 1st house. If Mars happens to occupy Kanya (Virgo) 2nd degree, according to the Hindu method, Mars would be considered as being in 6th to the lagna, and therefore badly placed. Actually, however, Mars is at a distance of 123 degrees from the Ascendant and so it is in a good trine aspect. It is advisable, therefore, to follow the method of finding out the exact distance. This is the proper and correct method. Hindus believe that a house-bhava gets completely destroyed if its owner is posited in a sign 6, 8, or 12 to the sign it owns, or lords of 6 or 8 or 12 to a particular bhava occupy that sign. A planet may own 2 houses. To one house it may be in 6, 8, or 12; to the other it will not be in 6, 8, or 12. That house to which it is in 6 or 12 will suffer, whereas the matters signified by the other bhava will improve.
  7. Is the aspected planet dignified?
    1. A planet in its exaltation sign is the strongest.
    2. Next is the one in a Vargottama position (occupying the same sign in both Rasi and Navamsa).
    3. The third is the one in its Mooltrikona day (house).
    4. The fourth, the one in its swakshetra (own house).
    5. The fifth is the planet that is in its friend’s quarters. A planet in debilitation or in enemy’s camp or connected with malefics in any manner, is said to be weakly posited and afflicted.
  8. Then note the nature of the sign occupied by the aspected planet. Is it a movable (chara) sign or fixed (sthira) sign, or common sign? Is the sign fiery, earthy, airy, or watery, positive or negative, fruitful or barren, etc. Similarly, find out whether the aspecting planet is a benefic by lordship, whether he is dignified or afflicted, beneficial or adverse by occupation and whether it aspects by a sign congenial to its nature. Also whether the aspecting planet is in a kendra (angular), panaphara (succedeent), or apokilma (cadent) house. Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 are termed kendra houses and planets herein are said to be accidentally dignified (they attain full strength to express themselves). Planets in 2, 5, 8, and 11 (called succeedent – panaphara) houses gain moderate strength. The houses 3, 6, 9, and 12 are called cadent (apoklima) and planets in these houses get weakened and lack opportunity for expression. It is also important to note who is the lord of the constellation in which aspecting planet is situated.

If one has correctly assimilated the basic elements constituting a horoscope, and has acquired the ability to synthesize properly, the value of this method to predict the nature of event, the time of event, and the extent to which it can offer, will be realized and recognized.
