True Astrology
Goravani Jyotish
Shri Jyoti Star
Parashara's Light
Solar Fire Gold
Solar Fire Australia
Jagannatha Hora
On the opening screen, click on the "Houses" tab at the bottom of the screen. Select "Placidus houses (KP Krishnamoorthy" and then click on "Ascendant (or other chosen reference) is the start of the first house.") For Horary Charts, click on the top tab "Miscellany" > "Prasna - 249 Model (KP)".

True Astrology
Goravani Jyotish
- Set your
preferences for KP in GJ.
- The example below is demonstrated using a
sample birth data of March 12, 1949.
- Click
on top left tab “Preferences” and then “Ayanamsa Preference”.
- Set your
settings to “Manual” (as opposed to “Standard”).
- In the
KP column under “Alignment Dates”, type in 04/15/1990. (April 15
1990)
- Under
the KP column “Precession Rates/Seconds/Year” type in
50.2388475
- Under “Date of Adjustment”, look at the KP Table and type in the closest alignment date according to the chart you are
referencing, for example, for a birth chart of March 12, 1949, you would type
in 4/15/1948. Why 1948? These Table dates are calculated for April 15 of every year, and therefore
for births before April 15, use the preceding year for Ayanamsa
accuracy.
- Then
under “Deg/Min/Sec”, look at the table and type in the D-M-S for 1948, which is
23:02:42, then calculate your chart.
- There is another wonderful KP option
in GJ. In GJ, in the Birth Data Entry section, you have an option for selecting
the Horary Number OR choosing the EXACT lagna for a chart; a feature that comes
in very handy when one is trying to construct a chart from an old book, where
the values simply don’t match since the inception of the computer age. So with
this feature, you can see exactly what the authors are referring to…kind of
important if you are seriously studying a Chart from an older
book.
- Lastly, go to “Print” > “Print Choices” and print out “KP Complete” (under “Charts”). This is a very succinct KP printout, and very helpful.
- You will
notice that the KP Ayanamsa for March 12, 1949 is 23:03:28. Note that for April
15, 1949, the Ayanamsa is 23:03:32.
- The downside to calculating KP charts with GJ is that you can’t be lazy. You must go in with every chart and enter the closest year, along with the appropriate degree, minute, and second. But this GJ option gives the most accurate KP ayanamsa, so it’s a trade off of time. If you are working on a chart in minute detail, GJ is recommended.
Shri Jyoti Star
- For
calculating the KP ayanamsa in SJS:
- Click
on “Global Options”.
- Under
“Ayanamsha” select “KP VarahaMihir”
- Right
below that, click on “Ayanamsa Edit”
- For
Epoch box, make sure it says 1900
- Value at
Epoch should read 22:22:16
- Annual Precession: type in 50.2388475
- This Ayanamsa in SJS won’t be as exact as the individual available options for GJ, but SJS it is much more convenient when calculating multiple charts. The differences in seconds are negligible. For example, the chart above in GJ shows a KP Ayanamsa of 23:03:28, while in SJS it shows 23:03:20…no biggie unless you are doing very detailed work.
- Andrew
Foss, creator of Shri Jyoti Star, pays meticulous attention to the
details of his program. You can always count on Andrew Foss for accuracy of
calculations in his SJS software programs.
Parashara's Light
- Go to “Options” > “Calculation
Options”
- Click on
the last one : "Krishnamurti”.
- Then in "Specify Offset" type -00:00:42 - Don't forget the minus sign. Step #3 is optional and used to line up the KP Ayanamsa more exactly with the KP Ayanamsa Table given in KP & Astrology 2003: page 92-93.
- The Sub Lords in PL6 in some charts may be slightly different from GJ or SJS, but the up
side to this program (PL6) is that if you go up to “Reports”>”Calculations”
and scroll down to “KP Chart” and “KP Significators”, you have a couple of very
nice KP printouts with a variety of useful information.
- PL6 is a
visually beautiful program, with an extensive variety of features.
Solar Fire Gold
Solar Fire Australia
- Solar Fire 5, 6, 7 and Solar Fire Gold (perhaps Winstar and/or Kepler are also
comparable) are wonderful for viewing Bi-wheels, Tri-Wheels, Quadriwheels Quinquiwheels etc., (circular
charts) with Transits and/or Solar Eclipses, Progressions, etc, etc., and putting all
planets in the right Placidus houses for viewing KP style, but earlier versions (SF5) have no
mention of Nakshatra or Subs. The aspect printouts are a definite plus and
really convenient. Solar Fire 5 and 6, 7, and Gold also address the planetary declinations
and their positions, which are mentioned in a few KP books. Parallels
and contra-parallels are similar to conjunctions, (although I am of the belief
that those involving Saturn more strongly simulate oppositions). Solar Eclipses
are easily calculated and easily viewed, separately, on a bi-wheel, etc, for
research in Solar Fire. Solar Fire Gold is an excellent, and visually beautiful all around Astrology program for both beginners and Professionals; Tropical or Sidereal Charts!
- In Solar Fire 5, 6, 7, and Solar Fire Gold, locate the top "Preferences" tab click on "Edit Settings" > "Zodiac". Under "Ayanamsa for Sidereal Charts" from the drop down menu, select "Krishnamurti". On the "houses" tab select "Placidus".
- Also, once viewing the selected Chart in SF versions or SFG, if
you click on "Pages", you can then select either "General" or "Vedic" for
additional viewing options. Solar Fire Gold is a wonderful program all the way around with amazing graphics.
Haydn's Jyotish
- Haydn’s Jyotish, and Jyotish Tools for Windows also all have options for setting your preferences to the KP ayanamsha, however, there is not an option in Jyotish Tools for Windows for setting your House system to Placidus. There is that option, however, in Haydn's Jyotish.
Astracadabra For Windows Mobile Phones
- Neville Lang's
Astracadabra for Pocket PC's or Windows Smart Phones, is a wonderful program for accessing KP on your Pocket PC or phone. After entering the preliminary KP settings, no adjustments need to be made as Astracadabra is already KP-user friendly.
